Music Albums


Happy morning dear readers and welcome back  to this new post!  As we all  know, artists have more and  more misery to sell albums because of people downloading illegally their songs or because of apps like Spotify.  This beeing said,  we can assume that the albums created approximately before the 2000's had more chances to be sell in big quantity, because at this epoch, the only way of listening to your favorite songs was to buy the album of the artist.  So, this text will be confirming , or not, this hypothesis by taking a look to the top 10 best selling albums of all  time!

10 - Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette
Certified sales: 24 million of albums (33 million claimed)

This album, released in 1995, was the third album of Alanis Morissette, but was her first album released internationally. 

9 - 21 by Adele
Certified sales: 25 million of albums (31 million claimed)

The British artist Adele Adkins released the album named 21 (in reference of her age) in 2011.  This album regroup three of her most famous songs as "Someone like You", "Rolling in the Deep" and "Set Fire to the Rain".  With no surprise, this album won a Grammy Award in 2012 for the album of the year.

8 - Back in Black by AC/DC
Certified sales: 26 million (50 million claimed)

The seventh album of the hard rock group AC/DC, released on July 25th 1980, was the first album recorded with the singer Brian Johnson, who replaced Bon Scott.  "Back in Black" pays homage to this singer who have been part of the group between 1974 to 1980 before dying in 1980.

7 - Rumours by Fleetwood Mac
Certified sales: 27 million of albums (40 million claimed)

The album "Rumours" was released on February 4th 1977 by Warner Brosd Studio.  The lyrics of the songs in this album have been influenced by relationship breakups before the writing of the album even began.

6 - The Bodyguard Soundtrack by Whitney Houston
Certified sales: 28 million of albums (42 million claimed)

"The Bodyguard" has been recorded between 1991 and 1992 before being released on November 17th 1992.  This album was the soundtrack for the movie "The Bodyguard" and won a Grammy Award for the album of the year.

5 - Led Zeppelin IV by Led Zeppelin
Certified sales: 29 million of albums (37 million claimed)

This album of a length of 42 minutes and 34 seconds was released on November 8th 1971 before becoming a commercial and critical success.  The legendary song "Stairway to Heaven", reknown for its famous guitar solo, is part of this untitled album.

4 - Come on Over by Shania Twain
Certified sales: 29 million of albums (33 million claimed)

The Canadian country singer Shania Twain released her album "Come On Over" on November 4th 1997 before becoming the best-selling album by a Canadian.

3 - Hotel California by The Eagles
Certified sales: 32 million of albums (42 million claimed)

The rock album "Hotel California" was released on December 8th 1976 and was named the same as the most famous song of the group, "Hotel California".  The album was nominated for the album of the year, but lost to the album "Rumours" by Fleetwood Mac.

2 - Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 by The Eagles
Certified sales: 41 million of albums (51 million claimed)

On February 17th 1976 was released "Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975" by The Eagles.  This album is the first one of the group to be a compilation of their best songs.

1 - Thriller by Michael Jackson
Certified sales: 47 million of albums (66 million claimed)

"Thriller" was released on November 30th 1982.  This album was recorded in Los Angeles from April to November 1982 with a production budget of $750,000.  In only one year, Michael Jackson saw his album become the world's best-selling album of all time.


Finally, we can see that older albums had more facility to be sold than recent ones, except for the album "21" by Adele that became a true success.  It is obvious that it is easier to keep listening our favorite songs on Spotify or on other apps like this, but the artists do not have a lot in return when we listen directly their songs on these apps.  Buying albums of our favorite artists can help them more than we can think.  It is like saying thank you for their good work.
